GHK-Cu (Copper Peptide): Anti-Aging, Skin Repair & Hair Benefits Explained

GHK-Cu (Glycine-Histidine-Lysine Copper) is a naturally occurring copper complex first identified in human plasma. Discovered by Loren Pickart PhD in 1973, it has since accumulated over 50 years of research showing remarkable regenerative effects in skin, hair, and wound healing. Unlike many peptides with limited human data, GHK-Cu has been extensively studied in human tissue models and clinical settings.

Mechanism of Action

GHK-Cu works through multiple pathways:

  • Collagen synthesis stimulation — activates fibroblasts to produce Type I and III collagen, the structural proteins of skin
  • Antioxidant activity — copper ions neutralise free radicals; GHK-Cu upregulates superoxide dismutase
  • Gene expression modulation — research shows GHK-Cu resets the expression of over 4,000 genes towards a younger phenotype
  • Anti-inflammatory — reduces TNF-α and IL-6 without immunosuppression
  • Angiogenesis — promotes new capillary formation feeding the skin

Skin Benefits

Wrinkle reduction: Clinical studies show 3-month topical GHK-Cu application reduces fine lines by 24–35% and improves skin elasticity. The effect is mediated through collagen and elastin upregulation.

Skin thickness: Aged skin thins due to collagen loss. GHK-Cu reverses this by stimulating dermal fibroblast activity.
